John,

We have been in discussion with Kudzu for weeks with assurances that they, 'are
looking for the missing bags.' We provided a spreadsheet of the ones that
vanished August 27 and 28 just prior to the online system. There have been
others dotted throughout and inquiries made on a regular basis. Both our
Lending staff and I have called and received calls from Lanter Office staff.
They have suggested we go ahead and make the claims but the $100 per bag will
not cover the replacement costs.

In speaking with others, I have heard similar things have happened elsewhere.
Since it is time for invoices, I was curious if others were going to adhere to
the ILL Code 4.8 about the Borrowing Library, even though assured the loss was
Kudzu related during August and early fall term.

Gail: This is the first I have heard of a U-Memphis' great number of books
vanishing. Can you provide a number (even a rough estimate) of how many books
have been lost?

Others: Is this a problem for other libraries, too?

We should be reporting any and all lost items ASAP to the courier when the loss
occurs. This is the whole reason we launched the tracking system in September.

Dear ASERL partners, using the Lanter Kudzu Courier,

It is the time of year that books, never received, either going to or returning
from the Lender or Borrower, are assessed and invoices prepared. We have a
great number of books that simply vanished through the shared courier system
and no doubt, many of you have as well.

In light of this very concerning situation, I am interested in what other Kudzu
Libraries plan to do as it relates to invoicing. Are we inclined to make the
claim for the many books lost through Lanter/Kudzu and invoice the remaining
amount to the Borrower? Or are any libraries inclined to 'forgive' the loss to
the Borrowing library in this case?

Thanks in advance for thoughts and feedback. You may contact me 'off list' or
call to discuss this further.
Gail
