ASERL Friends: A reminder that we will host a webinar tomorrow morning (Friday, Oct 23) highlighting several new models of peer review, including our first-ever overseas presenters. We just tested the e-meeting software and it appears to be working
well, in spite of the great distances. Our thanks to Schol-Comm co-chair Robin Sinn (Johns Hopkins University) for her great work in organizing this event. The programs we will review tomorrow are Peerage of Science, eLife, and Rubriq. Peerage of Science: Janne-Tuomas Seppänen is co-founder and managing director of Peerage of Science. Janne will focus on quality in peer review. Authors, readers, publishers, libraries, and society need to be able to trust that peer
review is done carefully. Too often, peer review gets done quickly, not carefully, because there is little incentive for excellence in peer reviewing work. Peerage of Science has developed a service - free for scientists, paid by publishers - that incentivizes
quality, and also empowers authors and reviewers in an unprecedented way. This talk will cover the "why", "how", and "then what" of the three social innovations at the core of the service: Open Engagement, Peer-Review-of-Peer-Review, and Concurrent Consideration
by multiple journals. eLife: Andy Collings worked at PLoS before joining eLife as Managing Editor in April 2012. He is now Executive Editor and oversees eLife's peer-review process. Andy will discuss the ways eLife's review process has been designed to
be constructive, fair, and efficient. He will also introduce some experiments relating to peer review, and touch upon the areas we might be able to improve upon further in the future. Rubriq: Jody Plank is Product Manager for Rubriq; before that he was responsible for the Figures/Illustration service at Rubriq's sister company, AJE. He received his PhD in Biochemistry from Duke University. Jody will describe Rubriq's
effort to save time, compensate reviewers, and make the best match between article and journal. The Rubriq Scorecard makes this possible. Please join us! As always, these sessions are available free to ASERL members, and it will be recorded for later playback.
