Good morning esteemed colleagues,

 

I am happy to share our news release with you announcing our new Elsevier subscription agreement. We reduced our journal spend by 75% and negotiated changes to Elsevier’s proffered agreement to align it with ECU’s values for sustainable scholarship. These included removing Elsevier’s standard confidentiality clause, adding accessibility language and privacy protections for users, clarifying post-termination access, and reducing Elsevier’s proposed annual price increases. Elsevier agreed to all the changes we requested (well, other than the overall price!!). The four-year agreement can be terminated early if sufficient funds are not allocated to enable ECU, in the exercise of its reasonable administrative discretion, to continue the contract.

 

Thanks to everyone who has shared information about their process and experience with Elsevier and other big deal publishers, and also those who have shared their negotiating values and sustainable scholarship priorities.
