Hey, Kudzu-ers:
Thanks to everyone who reviewed the draft policy changes. Here is the one question I received that may require further thinking / conversation. I welcome feedback from you-all.
Hi John,
I am happy with the agreement in general, although the one thing that I find a little difficult is the recall issue.
>>Here’s what is in the proposed new policy: 9. All materials lent through this agreement are subject to recall by the lender and should be returned as soon as possible. All recalls and overdue materials will be sent to the lending library via expedited delivery as soon as possible. The standard method for returning an item to the lending library will be USPS book rate. <<
It is not that I am unwilling to return a book to the lender, but in some cases I have received recalls for books that we hadn’t even received. When one of our books has been loaned out to another library through ILL, we tell our patrons to submit an ILL request and we get a copy for them that way rather than sending a recall which would often take longer to get back to us than doing a regular ILL request and cause extra work for the library that borrowed it. Also it is not always easy to get a book back from a patron in a timely manner despite our best efforts.
I understand it is our responsibility to get items back to the lender and I am certainly willing to do that to the best of my ability but I do wonder there could be a little more flexibility such as the lender seeing if they could get the book from another library in a reasonable time without having to recall their copy.
Of course if it is something that is just not readily available or would take longer to get through ILL then a recall is appropriate -- we respect that, and do our best to expedite the return.
Please let me know your comments & suggestions.
Thanks.

Hey folks:
A reminder that comments on these draft changes to the Kudzu ILL policy/process document are due by the end of the week. I’ve gotten comments from Shirley at VCU, plus one or two affirmations so far. Anyone else?

Subject: PLEASE REVIEW: Draft changes to Kudzu Policies/Processes
Good afternoon, Kudzu-istas:
As promised, we have reviewed the longstanding “Guidelines for Expediting Delivery of Information Among Libraries Participating in ASERL’s Kudzu Project.” My thanks to Courtney Crepeau (U-Kentucky), Tracy Luna (U-Tennessee), and Shirley Thomas (VCU) for sharing their expertise on this effort.
Attached for your review is the proposed new Kudzu policy/process document. You’ll see the proposed additions/deletions/changes highlighted – hope this is not too hard to decipher.
Please review / comment and/or offer your support for these changes by March 1, 2015 by sending a note to kudzu-ops [at] aserl-lists.org so the Kudzu-Ops group can be aware of the status.
Thanks very kindly.
