Please see the update message below from Julia Rholes (U-Mississippi) and Mary Clark (Library of Virginia) regarding our meeting with GPO leadership last week in Washington, DC.  Thanks.

Dear ASERL colleagues,

On Wednesday, January 11, several members of the ASERL Collaborative Federal Depository Program Steering Committee and the ASERL Deans FDLP Steering Committee met with Superintendent of Documents Mary Alice Baish, GPO General Counsel Drew Spalding, GPO Chief Communications Officer Andrew Sherman, as well as several other GPO staff members to discuss ASERL’s FDLP project. While GPO management supports the overall project and goals of ASERL’s efforts in this arena, there continues to be a difference in interpretation of the use of the terms ‘area served’ and ‘region’ within Title 44.

GPO seeks modifications to ASERL’s Guidelines and the disposition database to reflect its interpretation of these terms. This would result in Selectives and Regionals within the state where the document resides having priority over Centers of Excellence in selecting items available from disposition listings.

We are considering this option and others, including possible designation of our current policies/processes as a multi-year pilot project, which would defer any changes in the Guidelines until the project has been more fully implemented and assessed.  Whatever the outcome of these discussions, we do not believe that this difference in interpretation should be an obstacle to continued progress with this critical program.

Thanks for your continued interest in this initiative.

Julia Rholes, Chair, ASERL Deans FDLP Steering Committee

Dean of Libraries, University of Mississippi

Mary Clark, Chair, ASERL CFDP Steering Committee

Director of Acquisitions a& Access Management, The Library of Virginia
