ASERL Friends: On December 21, 2011 a petition entitled “Yes We Scan” was posted by Carl Malamud, President of Public.Resource.Org and John D. Podesta, Chair, Center for American Progress on the White House’s “We The People, Your Voice In Government” website. The petition calls for the establishment of a Presidential commission or a high-level interagency Task Force that will answer within one year "What would it take to scan .gov? What are the federal holdings at the National Archives, the Smithsonian, the National Libraries, and more; what would it take to digitize them; how much would it cost; and what are the economic and non-economic benefits?” The petition and letter can be found at: http://bit.ly/tPafMk and https://yeswescan.org/. ASERL members feel strongly that increased online access to government information would be an important advancement for libraries that serve the American public. We ask that you consider signing the petition above. The Obama Administration has a standing policy that it will issue an official response to this (and any) petition if it garners 25,000 signatures within 30 days. As of this writing, less than 1000 signatures have been posted for the “yes We Scan” petition. If we want this initiative to move forward, we have work to do – so please help spread the word. LASTLY: please be aware that signing any petition included in this White House initiative requires signing up for a White House account. Having done it last week, I can assure you it is easy and quick. Once this is accomplished, signing a petition is very simple. Please do not let this be a barrier to your support for this idea. Thanks for considering this request. And again – please spread the word to your family, friends and colleagues. --jeb |
