As of yesterday, there are 34 signatories to the petition and some very supportive comments. We would like to have a strong response, especially from Selectives, and we would welcome comments on the ASERL disposition database from those who are familiar using or familiar with it.

If you have already signed the petition, many thanks. If you have not, please consider signing it and sharing your comments today!

ASERL will summarize the petition results next week so they can be shared at the DLC meeting and we would like to have a broad response, demonstrating the acceptance of this plan among the ASERL member libraries and our colleagues in other depository libraries in the southeast.

If you are a regional documents coordinator and you have not yet informed the directors and documents coordinators at your Selectives about the petition, please send them the information today. You can forward my message, included below, or write your own. If you have already notified your Selectives, please consider sending a reminder. Please copy John Burger and me on your messages, so we will know your Selectives received notice about the petition.

Thank you!

Judy

Subject: Seeking your Support for the ASERL Guidelines for Management and Disposition of Federal Depository Library Collections in the Southeast

As you know, we have been working collaboratively in the SE for the past two years to develop common Guidelines for Management and Disposition of Federal Depository Library Collections in the Southeast. The Implementation Plan was adopted April 27, 2011. The ASERL Documents Disposition Database (http://www.aserl.org/aserls-documents-disposition-database/) was developed to automate the needs and offers process. It is already in use in several states and other states are preparing to use it.

The intent of the plan from the beginning was to comply with 44 USC Chapter 19, the legislation governing the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP). The Government Printing Office (GPO) was consulted as the plan was drafted, and we were assured that we were in compliance with the law.

More recently, with a new Superintendent of Documents at GPO, ASERL has received two letters that contradict the previous review/approval of the ASERL plan and assert that it is not in compliance with the law or the FDLP regulations issued in June 2011.  (The letters are available online at http://bit.ly/oKc636.)  At this time we are not conceding on any of the points raised by GPO, but we are reviewing the letters carefully in order to respond.

Meanwhile, we have created an online petition available now at http://svy.mk/n3hdgo to document support for this initiative from library deans/directors, documents librarians, and others with an interest.  We ask that you consider signing this petition at your earliest convenience. Please include a personal comment that describes why you feel the ASERL Plan is important to the future of FDLP and how it is a cost-effective initiative that supports improved collection management processes, provides greater public access to federal documents, and streamlines work processes used by depository libraries.

Please feel free to share this message with other libraries that may have an interest and with individuals who use these important collections through our libraries. You do not have to work at a Federal Depository Library to reply.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact me, ASERL Executive Director John Burger, or any of the other members of the ASERL FDLP Deans Steering Committee:

            Terry Birdwhistle, University of Kentucky

Larry Boyer, East Carolina University

Sylverna Ford, University of Memphis

Lance Query, Tulane University

Julia Rholes, University of Mississippi

Kay Wall, Clemson University

I apologize if you receive this message multiple times. We are trying to make sure that it reaches a broad audience and you may be on multiple mailings lists.

Thank you in advance for supporting this initiative by signing the petition.

Judy
