Following up from Wednesday's ASERL ILL Community Call

Hello colleagues:

I wanted to send a quick thanks to everyone who participated in our community call this week. It is always enlightening to hear what’s on your minds!

Among the highlights:

  • There’s still interest in Alma-to-Alma sharing, but also notes of problems with it, and an acknowledgement that it may not solve the problems we’re running into.
  • The problem of interoperability is big. Large service providers (think OCLC, Ex Libris) do not prioritize our need for systems that play together, and there’s no incentive for them to do so aside from customer pressure. People feel a bit trapped into using these systems but would like to see alternatives and adoption of ISO standards.
  • Experiences vary from library to library; satisfaction with Alma, ReShare, and other systems may be dependent on the staff and resources a library has available to dedicate to making them work. [Ed note: This is where collaboration helps!]
  • We’re looking at inviting ReShare and ReShare users to a session to discuss what’s happening there these days.
  • The big winners in the topics interest survey: CDL e-book lending/legal licenses for electronic lending; copyright and ILL policies; Tips and Tweaks in workflows.

Do any of these topics spark your interest? Would you be willing to present or lead a conversation? Let us know!

Please note that we hope to be able to have open, honest conversations here, and to that end I have restricted access to the Google folder holding the notes. If you are at an ASERL or Kudzu institution you may receive a notification from Google inviting you to the folder; if you don’t get that message and want in, just shoot me an email. Note that if you are logged into your browser under a non-institutional account (e.g., your personal address rather than a .edu), the folder may not recognize you.

If your institution has not yet filled in the systems overview, please do!

We value your time and attention. We will try not to overschedule but there are a lot of topics that appear to be ripe for collaborative dissection; stay tuned for future community calls.

Best wishes,
