ASERL and WRLC Resource Sharing Friends: We are exploring the feasibility of starting an Occam’s Reader group within ASERL and WRLC, to facilitate sharing of e-book content among our members.
You may recall
Occam's Reader provides
a single, secure method for lending libraries to share eBooks and similar resources. Users of the Occam's Reader system receive an email generated by the lending institution. This email includes a customized, token-authenticated link to view their item in
a web browser. For more information about how this works, please see the web-demo at
http://occamsreader.org/. NOTE: At this time, only one publisher (Springer) has agreed to allow their e-book content to be shared using the Occam’s Reader system. The developers are hoping to attract wider publisher participation
as more libraries adopt the system, but for now Springer is the only content provider. COST: Occam’s Reader is available at a flat-rate annual subscription.
·
The cost is $500/library/year.
·
If we are able to attract 10 or more ASERL/WRLC libraries, the cost is $450/library/year.
·
If we get 20 or more ASERL/WRLC libraries to participate, the cost drops to $400/library/year.
We are hoping to create a cadre of libraries with existing resource sharing relationships to experiment with the use of Occam’s Reader for a year or two, to see if it provides a useful complement to their other resource sharing services.
