ASERL Friends:

We encourage your participation in the following two events to commemorate Fair
Use Wek 2015:

February 24 - "Does Fair Use Really Work?" webinar with Kevin Smith, Director,
Copyright & Scholarly Communication, Duke University Libraries, and sponsored
by ACRL.
DESRCRIPTION: Fair use seems obscure and difficult to many, especially after
the Appeals Court ruling in the Georgia State case. Some may be wondering if
it is really a workable approach to balancing the rights of creators with
socially desirable uses. Yet many other countries are seeking to emulate what
they see as the benefits of fair use. In this webinar, Kevin will try to unwind
some of the complexity of fair use, consider the role of context in making fair
use decisions, and suggest strategies for deciding when to turn to fair use and
how to think through the analysis.
TIME: 2pm ET / 1pm Central Time
REGISTER: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/LYL2Y2N no later than Feb 21.

February 26 - Presenting the "Statement of Best Practices in Fair Use of
Collections Containing Orphan Works," hosted by the Program on Information
Justice and Intellectual Property at American University's Washington College
of Law.
DESCRIPTION: This is an in-person event held in Washington DC, with a webcast
available for remote viewers. Speakers will include Peter Jaszi and Dave
Hansen, among others. Over the last several years, libraries, archives and
other memory institutions have recognized that copyright law poses a
significant obstacle to digital preservation of and online access to large
segments of their collections. This problem especially acute for archives and
collections that contain orphan works-i.e., works for which it is difficult or
impossible to find rights holders who might give permission for their use. The
Statement of Best Practices in Fair Use of Collections Containing Orphan Works
for Libraries, Archives, and Other Memory Institutions, released in December
2014, addresses how memory institutions can apply fair use to overcome these
challenges.
REGISTER: If you'd like to attend the in-person event at American University,
please register at http://www.jotformpro.com/pijip/events.
** To view the live webcast, simply go to
http://www.pijip.org/fairuse/owbp2015feb/ starting at 1:15pm ET on Feb 26.
(Initial overview presentation should conclude by approx. 2:45pm ET).

We hope you find these events to be useful and interesting. Please let me know
any questions. Thank you.
