ASERL Colleagues: FYI – This message was just sent to the Regionals in the Southeast (documents librarians and their deans/directors) informing of the recent process changes to ASERL’s FDLP Guidelines
and asking the Regionals to spread the word to their Selectives. We are sharing this with you-all to further get out the message. We are asking for feedback on the updated Guidelines to be sent to me or Julia Rholes (Chairperson of the ASERL Deans FDLP Steering
Cmte – jrholes [at] olemiss.edu) by August 15th. Importantly, the revised text of the Guidelines and an updated Executive Summary or now online – see the links below. Our thanks for your ongoing support of this program! --jeb From: John Burger
ASERL Friends: As many of you know already, ASERL's "Guidelines for Management and Disposition of Federal Depository Library Collections in the Southeast — Implementation Plan" was recently modified, primarily to address concerns raised by GPO leaders
regarding the sequencing of the disposition process. The ASERL Guidelines continue to use a 45 day timetable for libraries to review/select FDLP materials posted for disposal by a Selective Depository in the Southeast Region. The changes are summarized below: Days 1 - 45 Primary Regional Library(ies) can view/select disposition items. This is the Regional with responsibility for the discarding library. In the case of states with two Regionals (Louisiana and Alabama), both Regionals would be considered
Primary. Days 6 - 45 Affiliated Depository Libraries – Selective Libraries served by the Primary Regional Library(ies) can view/select disposition items. These are Selectives from the same state as the discarding library or served by the same multi-state
Regional. It also includes all Selectives in a state with two Regionals. Days 11 - 45 All Center of Excellence (COE) Libraries can view/select disposition items. This applies only to discards within their areas of COE responsibility. Days 26 - 45 Other Regional Libraries in the Southeast can view/select disposition items. Regionals will already have access to discards from their own states/territories and their individual areas of COE responsibilities. This will expand their
access to all other available discards. Days 31 - 45 All Depository Libraries in the Southeast can view/select disposition items. In this final stage, all depository libraries in the southeast have access to the unclaimed discards. These changes were approved unanimously at the Spring 2012 ASERL Membership Meeting. The revised Guidelines describing the full details of these changes are now available online at
bit.ly/LyyQLz . An updated Executive Summary is also available at
bit.ly/LXJxZI. The disposition software tool is being modified to reflect these changes and will be online on/about October 1st. ** Depository libraries wishing to use the disposition tool may continue to do so while the software modifications are
under development. ** NEXT STEPS -- YOUR HELP NEEDED As Regional Depositories in the Southeast, we ask for your assistance in spreading the word about these changes to the library directors and document coordinators at Selective Depositories under your responsibility -- Forwarding this
email is sufficient. Any questions, concerns, or other feedback about these changes can be sent to me (jburger [at] aserl.org) and/or to Julia Rholes, chair of ASERL's FDLP Steering Committee, at
jrholes [at] olemiss.edu. We ask for your feedback no later than August 15, 2012.
Many thanks for your assistance with this request and your ongoing support of this important initiative. --jeb John Burger, Executive Director Association of Southeastern Research Libraries ASERL Box 90182 / 411 Chapel Drive 226A Bostock Library Durham, NC 27708 919-681-2531 – telephone 919-681-0805 -- fax |
