Hello, Collections colleagues, I just wanted to pass along this offer from Backstage, which I've already sent to our Government Documents lists. MARCIVE announced the cessation of their operations effective the end of the year, and the GPO then announced the termination of their Cataloging Record Distribution Service. This combination leaves some libraries in the lurch for handling the work of ingesting government information records. Shortly afterward we received word that Backstage Library Services has a significant promotional discount through the end of the year that might help libraries with continuing authority control processing. Here is a link<https://bslw.com/authority-control/transitioning-authority-control-processes/> to a page we developed on our website to talk through how our services work - ultimately, they are very similar to MARCIVE's although the names and terms are different. Your gov info folks may have thoughts to share with you. Backstage has been very responsive and will be happy to answer any of your questions. If you'd like more information, please contact Alexandra Parran at aparran [at] bslw.com<mailto:aparran [at] bslw.com>. --Rebecca Rebecca Crist Program Coordinator for Shared Collections Resources ASERL, the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries 540 Asbury Circle, Suite 316 Atlanta, GA 30322-1006 rebecca [at] aserl.org<mailto:rebecca [at] aserl.org> From: Alexandra Parran <aparran [at] bslw.com<mailto:aparran [at] bslw.com>> Sent: Monday, December 9, 2024 2:43 PM To: John Burger, ASERL <jburger [at] aserl.org<mailto:jburger [at] aserl.org>>; Elaina Norlin <enorlin [at] aserl.org<mailto:enorlin [at] aserl.org>> Subject: Authority Control at Backstage Hello John and Elaina! With the closing of MARCIVE on 12/31/24, we have been speaking with more libraries about the importance of continuing authority control processing. Backstage offers this service and more. Due to the timing of this event and the budget challenges that it presents, we are offering an initial onboarding process (or "Basefile Processing") at a substantial discount for those libraries that can sign with us by the end of the year. As a note, because the promotional pricing we are offering is on average a 70% - 80% discount, our usual 8% discount with ASERL wouldn't apply. Ongoing authority control, such as with our notification services, does not fall within our regular network agreement. However, we hope the promotional discount to start with a new provider could be great news for libraries looking for alternative data solutions. Would you be willing to share this information with your libraries with these points in mind? I'm happy to put together an email that provides details about the promotional discount, who to contact, and includes a link to a resource page we've developed to help answer some questions. I will also be discussing the deadline with our product expert to make certain the end-of-year timeline is static - there is a chance we may be able to extend it. Let us know if there are other ways Backstage could be of assistance.
