The Collaborative Future’s Accessibility Working Group calls on libraries using Primo VE and Alma to attend another Accessibility Bridge meeting. The working group is part of the Ontario Council of University Libraries. Please share this invitation within your library/consortia. Everyone has talents and skills that can improve the library experiences of users with disabilities. Title: Prototyping Accessible Description and Discovery in Alma and Primo: Some Learnings from the CARL-ARL Marrakesh Treaty Implementation<https://www.arl.org/news/arl-and-carl-form-joint-task-force-on-marrakesh-treaty-implementation/> Project Abstract: One of the components of the work of the above was to work with two Alma and Primo libraries, the University of Florida, a member of the 40-university consortia Florida Virtual Campus (FLVC), and the University of Windsor, a member library of the 18-university Ontario Council of University Libraries (OCUL). In the project, we sought to investigate and prototype the possibilities that the Ex Libris library services platform allows to improve access to digital accessible books, in EPUB, PDF and DAISY formats. This session will overview some of these possibilities. We did not get to actually put these into the prototyping in many cases, because of existing limitations in how consortia were set up. We will have some discussion time for participants to share their ideas and individual approaches in making digital accessible materials more available and discoverable in research library contexts. Speaker Pascal Calarco currently serves as a Systems Librarian and Scholarly Communications Librarian, University with a few liaison librarian responsibilities. Pascal served as a Visiting Program Officer for CARL and ARL on their joint Marrakesh Treaty Library Implementation project, from 2021-2023. The final report is available (or will be shortly) on the ARL and CARL websites. Pascal holds an MLIS from McGill University and is working on a Master of Arts in Political Science part time at Windsor. Pascal previously served as University Librarian at Windsor from 2016-2021, and has served in various roles at research libraries in the United States and Canada since 1995. Can you circulate it widely, please? On October 16th at 1pm to 2pm Eastern, Ashley Shaw and Dr. Natalie Martiniello are going to be giving a talk hosted through the Digital Accessibility in Academic Libraries community of practice, which is part of the Canadian Association of Professional Academic Librarians. We plan to have a live captioner. It’s a public event, so please feel free to extend widely. How to navigate the academic library: empowering blind scholars on their quest for knowledge Abstract: In this session, we walk library professionals through the academic journey of blind scholars, identifying roadblocks along the way. We suggest tangible things library professionals can do to remove these roadblocks, so that blind scholars can achieve their full potential. Presenters: Ashley Shaw is a Masters student in the Community Psychology program at Wilfrid Laurier University. The Social Science and Humanities Research Council awarded her a Masters scholarship to study workplace inclusion and accessibility, as well as employment-related interventions for adults who are blind and visually impaired. She is also a recipient of the Ontario Graduate Scholarship. She has worked as a Strategic Writer and Research Associate with the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB), and as the Wilfrid Laurier University Library Web Accessibility Advisor. Ashley currently works as the Clinical Performance and Evaluation Analyst for Vision Loss Rehabilitation Canada. Dr. Natalie Martiniello is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Psychology at Concordia University. The Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR) awarded her a Health Systems Impact fellowship to explore accessibility and inclusion for blind scholars in Postsecondary education, with a focus on accessible research and access to information in traditionally under-represented fields within the health and science ecosystem. She also lectures in the Graduate program in Visual Impairment at the University of Montreal, which trains future professionals in the field of blindness and low vision. She previously worked as a braille specialist within the education and rehabilitation system, where she taught braille and accessible technologies to blind individuals across the age spectrum. Natalie is a lifelong braille reader and passionate about equitable access to information, communication and literacy, especially for those who use non-visual methods such as braille and tactile graphics.
