ASERL Friends:

Instead of the usual weekly webinar update, I am sharing some points that I
hope will be useful to you as the new federal Copyright Claims Board is set to
begin its initial operations on June 16, 2022. This is the mechanism
established by the CASE Act<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CASE_Act> to field
copyright infringement claims without having to go to federal court. While
libraries and archives may opt-out of the process (opt-outs include
library/archive employees' activities during the course of their work), anyone
who is found guilty through the CCB tribunal could face fines up to $30,000 per
infringement. It's new, untested, and has created much concern about
'copyright trolls' and misunderstanding / misuse.

HOPEFULLY-USEFUL LINKS

I hope this initial information is useful. I welcome other resources / links
to other helpful info. I suspect we will be contending with the after-effects
of this law for quite some time.

Kind regards,
