Sharing interesting news from our colleagues at Chapel Hill. --jeb From: ASERL-Deans <aserl-deans-bounces+jburger=aserl.org [at] aserl-lists.org> On Behalf Of Westbrooks, Elaine Louise Sent: Tuesday, October 22, 2019 3:18 PM To: John Burger <jburger [at] aserl.org> Cc: aserl-deans [at] aserl-lists.org Subject: [aserl-deans] UNC Chapel Hill Library to Debut Open Access Pilot with SAGE Publishing Dear Colleagues: Happy Open Access Week! I am very pleased to share with you the news we announced today--that the University Libraries at UNC-Chapel Hill has entered into a pilot open access agreement with SAGE Publishing. You can read about it at these links: * Library to Debut Open Access Pilot with SAGE Publishing<https://library.unc.edu/2019/10/sage-pilot/> * SAGE announces new open access publishing agreement with UNC-Chapel Hill Libraries<https://us.sagepub.com/en-us/nam/press/sage-announces-new-open-access-publishing-agreement-with-unc-chapel-hill-libraries> * "The Old Models Are Not Working:" A Librarian on the New Big Deal<https://www.socialsciencespace.com/2019/10/the-old-models-are-not-working-a-librarian-on-the-new-big-deal/> Under the terms of the agreement, a portion of our subscription fees to SAGE in the coming year will underwrite the APCs for UNC-Chapel Hill authors to publish open access in SAGE journals. This will cover a minimum of 64 authors. We will also receive credits for authors who have grant or other outside funding, so the total number will be much higher. In addition, the agreement will allow all UNC-Chapel Hill authors who publish in SAGE to deposit a copy of their article into the Carolina Digital Repository<https://cdr.lib.unc.edu/>. We hope to work with SAGE to automate that process. We have been working hard on campus to raise awareness about the costs of scholarly publishing - a campaign we are calling "Sustainable Scholarship<https://sustainablescholarship.unc.edu/at-carolina/>." Among our efforts have been town halls, liaison and other 1:1 outreach, presentations to faculty governance, and media, including a recent interview with the campus faculty/staff publication<https://sustainablescholarship.unc.edu/at-carolina/> and our student newspaper<https://www.dailytarheel.com/article/2019/09/faculty-research-0919>. Our stated goals are to make scholarship affordable, sustainable, open, and transparent - goals that I know I share with all of you. We will be monitoring uptake and the impact of this pilot very carefully and I will be glad to share our findings with you in the future. Let me know if you have any questions.
